Judging Rules

The rules described hereunder are based on the Rules and Regulations of the Takamatsu International Piano Competition Organizing Committee (hereinafter referred to as “the Rules and Regulations”) and shall stipulate all the items required for judging the Competition.

Article 1 Structure of the Competition

The Competition consists of the Initial Selection Round, Preliminary Rounds 1, 2, and 3 and the Final Round.

1. Initial Selection Round

The purpose of the Initial Selection Round is to select the 40 participants who will proceed to Preliminary Round 1. It will be adjudicated by Jury for the Initial Selection in accordance with the Rules and Regulations.

  1. The Initial Selection Round will be conducted on the basis of the documents submitted by applicants and a video data/DVD recording of the applicants performing the set pieces.
  2. The identity of each applicant will not be made known to the Jury.
  3. Applicants will be evaluated by increments of 1 point up to a maximum of 100 points.
  4. The rank of each applicant will be calculated by totaling of all the jury members’ scores.
  5. The Jury for the Initial Selection shall determine which applicants will proceed to Preliminary Round 1 in descending order according to score. In the event that 2 or more applicants at the cutoff line receive the same score, the Jury will consult.
  6. The Jury for the Initial Selection can select runners-up.

2. Preliminary Rounds (Round 1, Round 2, Round 3)

The purpose of the Preliminary Rounds is to determine whether each contestant will proceed to the next round. The Preliminary Rounds will be judged by the Jury for the Performance Rounds (hereinafter referred to as the “Jury”) as stipulated in the Rules and Regulations. Before judging commences, the Chairperson of Jury will convene a meeting of the Jury to confirm the method of judging.
The number of contestants proceeding to a subsequent round of the Competition will be 20 in Round 1, 10 in Round 2, and 5 in Round 3.

  1. The jury members will score each contestant by awarding points in increments of 0.5 up to a maximum of 25. As a reference, the minimum line is 14 points with 20 points or more being required to qualify for the subsequent Round. However, the jury member cannot judge a contestant stipulated in Article 3 Item 4 of these Judging Rules.
  2. To determine the rank of each contestant, the lowest and highest scores will be eliminated, and the scores of the remaining jury members will be totaled to calculate the contestant’s average score. In the event that the lowest or highest score is awarded by 2 or more jury members, only 1 member’s score will be eliminated.
  3. The jury members will determine the rank of each contestant in the order of the contestant’s average scores from the highest to the lowest. If several contestants are at the pass line, the Jury will consult.

3. Final Round

Final Round will be judged by the Jury as stipulated in the Rules and Regulations.

  1. The jury members will consult and vote to rank the contestants, and the decision will be made by a majority vote.
  2. The ranking will be determined in order of 1st prize to 5th prize.
First, the jury members will decide by a show of hands whether the 1st prize should be awarded.
In the event of a tie between those in favor and those opposed, the decision shall be made by doubling the vote of the Chairperson of Jury.
Next, each jury member will write the name of the contestant who deserves the 1st prize on the ballot. If Article 3 Item 4 is applicable, his or her vote shall not be counted and the decision shall be made with one less denominator.
In the case of the same number of votes are casted, the 1st prize will go to the contestant with the higher rank in Round 3. If this does not settle, the 1st prize will go to the contestant with the higher rank in Round 2.
  3. The same voting procedure will apply to determine the 2nd prize and below.

Article 2  Piano Selection and Order of Performance

  1. Contestants will draw lots during the orientation to determine the order of performance.
  2. Drawing for the order of performance shall begin with the contestant whose name starts with the alphabet drawn by the Chairperson of the Competition Promotion Committee.
  3. Contestants will choose which piano they will use.
  4. The piano to be used in a subsequent round may be changed within one hour after the result announcements of Round 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

Article 3  Judging Principles

  1. The jury members shall make a fair evaluation at all times.
  2. The jury members shall evaluate the performance of all contestants in the Competition, except for those stipulated in Article 3 Item 4. If a jury member is absent for any part of the round, the evaluation of that particular jury member for that particular round will be considered invalid.
  3. The jury members are prohibited from having any contact with contestants during the period in which the Competition is being held. However, this rule does not apply to any contestants who have been eliminated from the Competition at an earlier stage.
  4. Any jury member who has provided private instruction to any of the contestants for more than one month within the past two years, or whose relative is a contestant, must inform the Chairperson of Jury the first time the Jury meets. A jury member may not discuss such a contestant with any other jury members.

Article 4  Announcement of Results

The evaluation of each jury member for the Final Round will be made public. However, the proceedings of the meeting shall be closed to the public and those present at the meeting shall not disclose its content.

Article 5  Conforming to Japanese Language Rules

These rules have been produced in Japanese and English. In any case of problems arising from the interpretation of these rules, the Japanese language version will be used as the standard for achieving a resolution.

Article 6  Handling of Difficult Matters

When any problem concerning the judging of the Competition that fails to be dissolved by these rules arises, the Chairperson of Jury shall consult with the Chairperson of the Operating Committee before making any decision.
